Approaching Composition №10
A downloadable tool for Windows, macOS, and Linux
A procedurally generated tribute to the 1915 painting Compositie 10 in zwart wit (Composition 10 in black and white) by Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondriaan.
Often seen as the culmination of previous works from his stay at the Domburg and Scheveningen beach resort, Compositie 10 in zwart wit is an interpretation of the rolling waves and breakwater of the North Sea. It's currently being exhibited at the Kröller-Müller Museum.
While sometimes seemingly random, there is always some kind of method to Mondriaan's abstract works. I've attempted to distill this work into a comprehensive set of rules, which I then translated to an algorithm.
Using the medium of generative design we can have a practically infinite amount of attempts approaching the original artwork. The elements (or Body
's, as I called them in the code) are placed randomly within the constraints of the program. Using sliders, you can tweak the amount, weight, density and size range of the elements. Press the S
key to save your attempt as an .png
image. Press M
to hide/show the sliders and press spacebar
to start from scratch.
